A Thank You to Joseph B. Doherty, Sr.

By Robert Freedman, Senior Editor, REALTOR® Magazine

Joseph B. Doherty, Sr., of Andover, Mass., was president of NAR in 1974 but his term of office was just one of the countless ways he gave back to the REALTOR® community over his many decades in real estate. Mr. Doherty passed away the day before Thanksgiving and without a doubt his was a life led in the spirt of that holiday.

Rotary Club, Greater Lawrence (Mass.) Boys Club, American Cancer Society, United Fund, Habitat for Humanity, the Professional Center for Handicapped Children in Andover—these were just some of the organizations and causes to which he gave his time, effort, and money over the years.

Little wonder that he was REALTOR® of the Year in Massachusetts in 1961 and again in 1963, and REALTOR® of the Year for his local association in 1962 and 1964.

When he wasn’t devoting his time to his business and charitable activities, he was serving in committee and leadership positions at all levels of the REALTOR® community. His leadership roles are simply too extensive to list in their entirety here, but among other things he served as a local, state, and national director, and chair of his local board’s educational, community service, and professional standards committees. He was a member of many more.

I never met Mr. Doherty but I understand that everyone who knew him speaks of his wonderful character. Just from looking at how deeply he involved himself in efforts to help his community and advance his profession, it’s clear his character embodies the spirt of Thanksgiving.

A Funeral mass was celebrated at St. Augustines Church in Andover. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lazarus House, P.O. Box 408, Lawrence, MA 01842, or to St. Augustines Church, 43 Essex Street, Andover, MA 01810.

  1. I had the good fortune of meeting Mr. Joseph B. Doherty Sr. when he was 92 years old, and he said that his term of office at NAR was thoroughly enjoyable. It was the year that NAR first admitted Realtors, not just Designated Realtors, to association membership, and the year that HUD was created. He is greatly missed and fondly remembered at his local board and by many others!
